How to prepare your home for new floor installation like a pro

Tuesday, May 20, 2025

Getting ready for a new floor installation is an exciting step toward updating the look, feel, and function of your home. Whether you're going with hardwood, laminate, carpet, or luxury vinyl, preparing your space the right way helps ensure a smooth, stress-free experience. At Flooring Solutions By Design in Lindon, UT, we’ve handled hundreds of residential flooring installations, and we know what it takes to get your home floor-ready like a pro.

Clear the space completely

Before the installation crew arrives, start by removing all furniture, rugs, plants, and personal items from the room. Don’t forget closets, corners, or under beds. The more accessible the floor, the faster and more efficiently our team can get to work. If you're not able to move heavy items yourself, let us know in advance—some installations include furniture moving, but it’s always best to clarify.

If the new flooring will run under appliances, be sure those are disconnected and moved out ahead of time. For more extensive residential flooring installations, like in kitchens or laundry rooms, we recommend hiring a professional to handle the disconnect and reconnect services.

Take care of valuables and electronics

Dust and vibration are part of the flooring installation process, so it's wise to protect fragile items and electronics. Remove wall hangings, art, and anything breakable from shelves and nearby surfaces. Even if the crew is working in one room, it’s best to safeguard anything on adjacent walls just in case.

If you have a home office or entertainment setup in the space, unplug and remove electronics before work begins. Label cords and store components together for an easier reconnect once your new floors are in place.

Make a plan for kids and pets

Flooring installation comes with noise, tools, and heavy equipment—all of which can be unsettling or even dangerous for kids and pets. To keep everyone safe and out of the way, plan ahead by setting up a temporary area for them away from the work zone.

In some cases, the installation may take a full day or longer depending on the size of the space and the type of flooring. If so, consider boarding pets or arranging playdates or outings for kids to make the process smoother for everyone involved.

Prep your subfloor if needed

Your subfloor is the foundation of your new floor installation, and sometimes it needs a little love before your new material can go down. Our team will evaluate your subfloor during the planning process, but if you’re removing old flooring yourself, be sure to clean up debris, nails, glue, or adhesive beforehand.

In some cases, leveling compounds or repairs may be necessary to ensure your new floors sit flat and last longer. Don’t worry—we’ll walk you through that step if it applies to your installation.

Ensure access and clear communication

Make sure there’s a clear path from your entryway to the installation area. This may include temporarily removing doors or clearing outdoor walkways. If you live in a gated community or multi-family unit, be sure to coordinate access for the flooring crew.

Good communication is just as important. Be available to answer questions, and don’t hesitate to voice any concerns. We want you to feel confident and informed every step of the way.
